What to Expect When Resolving Your Tax Debt

Clients who retain our tax relief services usually want to know two things: whether their tax debt can be settled for less than they owe and how long the process may take. Some relief may begin soon after we start representing you, while other parts of the resolution process can take time. Tax problems often develop over an extended period, so resolving them may also require patience. In most cases, you will not need to communicate directly with the IRS while we represent you. An Offer in Compromise can typically take 6–12 months or longer, depending on the amount owed, the complexity of the case, and your individual circumstances.

Road Map to Resolution

If you have never been a client of ours, the first step is to call or come in for your confidential, no obligation, free consultation. At this meeting, an experienced tax resolution consultant, CPA, attorney, or enrolled agent will evaluate your situation and will discuss all available options for resolving your matter. This generally takes about 30-45 minutes; however, there are times when the information provided at this meeting is not sufficient to determine a course of action. It is advised, therefore, to have all recent notices and correspondence from the IRS available during our first in-person or telephone consultation. The first step is to hire us to obtain your IRS transcripts and Record of Account so we can best evaluate all of your alternative settlement options.

Step-by-Step Guidance Through the Tax Resolution Process

This works especially well because your sections naturally move through retaining the firm, beginning the process, becoming compliant, client responsibilities, settlement negotiation, and reaching a final resolution.

Retaining Our Firm

After your consultation, if our firm is a good fit for your needs, you may choose to retain us as your tax representative. You will sign an engagement letter, arrange payment for services, and we will file the appropriate power of attorney with the IRS and state authorities when required, helping establish clear representation from the start.

Beginning the Tax Resolution Process

Once representation begins, a licensed tax professional will review your situation and develop a phased strategy for resolving your case. Your representative will explain the recommended next steps, guide you through the process, and remain available by phone, email, or in person as your tax matter moves forward toward resolution.

IRS Compliance

Before the IRS will generally accept a negotiation or settlement, you must become compliant with required filings and current tax obligations. This may include preparing past-due returns, making estimated tax payments, and correcting withholding. Your tax professional will explain what is needed and guide you through each required step properly and with greater confidence.

Your Responsibilities

Successful tax resolution requires active cooperation between you and our firm. Clients should provide requested documents and information promptly, return phone calls and emails in a timely manner, and stay in regular contact throughout the case. Consistent communication and follow-through help keep the resolution process moving forward smoothly and efficiently.

Tax Settlement Negotiation

We will present a proposed resolution to the IRS based on your circumstances and work toward an acceptable outcome. Because proposals are not always approved immediately, our team will follow up, provide additional information whenmonitor progress, and continue negotiations until the matter reaches an appropriate resolution for you.

Tax Resolution Is Reached

Once the IRS reaches a resolution, we will review the final terms to confirm they reflect what was agreed upon. If changes are needed, we will address them and explain the next steps. We will provide guidance to help you maintain compliance and reduce the risk of future tax problems while staying financially prepared moving forward.
